
Idaho isn’t typically terribly high on people’s lists, but I will tell you—I will never forget driving from mountains and rivers of western Idaho into a landscape so extraterrestrial as the aptly named Craters of the Moon National Monument. Created from volcanic activity, you can hike across lava flows, into caves, and onto cinder cones. At night, peer into starry skies.
